There is nothing quite like receiving a delivery at your door month after month full of beauty surprises, it feels like a birthday jack pot over and over again. However, what you seem to get in your box quantity and quality varies greatly between companies. I honestly think monthly box subscriptions are such nice idea, whether you want to treat yourself and discover new products each month or whether your fancy signing a friend up for an unusual birthday gift. I have spent the last few months signed up to different beauty 'monthly boxes' to find out who I think provides the best value for money as well as which box appeals most to me and one I will continue subscription with.
MY LITTLE BOX
£14.95 per month, post and packaging included.
My little box company was the first monthly subscription I signed up too, I saw an advertisement one day whilst I was browsing the Internet and was instantly attracted to their design work and cute layout.
What is my little box?
Every month your 'My little box' holds a different theme. For example the month of June features a white box and beautifully scribbled across the front of the box read “Summer Vibes”. Every box includes products/gifts selected based on the monthly theme as well as a magazine tailored to that theme as well. For the month of June the “summer vibes magazine contained articles on the best European festivals, hair tutorials that will work on un washed hair (bonus on the festival front), how to use the products included in your box and fun ways to stand out at a festival, all things rather fitting to the summer theme. As well as receiving this themed magazine, you will also get products, which vary hugely from month to month. These things have so far included: Little box own beauty brand products, Beauty product's from other companies (Nails inc. etc.), hair accessories, jewellery, items of clothing (scarf, top).
Although I did really enjoyed receiving this box monthly, I have ended my subscription and here's the low down why.
Beautiful graphic design on all packaging and the overall box.
Lovely presentation a real treat to look at.
Full size products (from time to time)
If you re looking for a random mix of things, lifestyle products and make up then you will love this box.
Although some months the gifts I received blew me away, such as a gold plated leaf design ring, I wasn't always satisfied with what I received for the amount I paid. I would definitely say that "My little box" is more of a lifestyle subscription than a beauty one. What I mean by this is although you do get beauty products monthly (mostly their own brand) a lot of their products are designed around the theme so you often end up getting gifts such as t-shirts, jewellery, head scarfs as a substitution for make up, and considering I signed up to experiment with new beauty products the uncertainty of not knowing what the next box is going to contain did not appeal to me.
A reoccurring pattern I identified was that each month features one beauty product from an outside brand such as, Nails inc, and then the rest of the beauty products are their own in house brand, and honey there's only a certain amount of flower smelling shower gel in a pretty floral package I can take before £14.95 is a waste of money.
A nice subscription if someone has money to spare or enjoys getting a completely different thing each month, but if your after make up in particular or consistency this box is not for you.
If you like the idea of a monthly beauty box prescription but don't want to splash the cash, then this is a fun brand to try.
What is Birchbox?
Each month you will be sent 5 sample size "Luxury" (their words not mine) products. These will range from perfume, to make up, and even shampoo and body wash. As well as your samples you will receive 1-2 bonus lifestyle items these might be things like herbals teas or food bar. However I must say getting a full size product is quite rare with birch box.
Each month you received 4-5 new beauty products to try, whether its make up, body wash, hair masks etc.
Nicely packaged, different graphic design each month. Sometimes it comes in a box with a helpful drawstring bag to reuse, some months it will be in other things such as a tote bag etc.
Helpful magazine telling you how to use each product.
They get to know you and your beauty habits, this is a really nice touch on signing up to Birchbox, you take a small questionnaire so they can get an idea for your beauty regime and tailor the products to match you. For example you can select your skin type, hair type etc.
They give you options, this is again nice touch. On months where they are sending an eyeliner (for example) they will give you the choice between colours so you can make sure it is a colour you would actually use.
Some brands I have never heard of, despite marketing told me Nars, Beauty blender etc.
Full size products are rare if not non existent
Hit and miss from month to month weather I will actually use all products.
I much preferred receiving Birchbox through the post compared to My little beauty box, as it consistently contained a variety of make up and that's what I signed up for. I also loved how I could tailor the products to suit me, to ensure I could skin/hair products that work for me. I would say however, you often get brands you won't even use or will have never heard it, so it definitely is hit and miss. If you are looking for a monthly box at a low cost I would recommend giving this a go, but If you want a monthly box for luxury products see the beauty box below.
I appreciate £35 initially seems extremely steep to be forking out monthly, however please don't just scroll passed this one as I can promise you it is SO worth it. When I first saw £35 monthly I immediately clicked off the website, confirming with myself that I certainly didn't want to spend £35 a month on a beauty box when I can't guarantee what it will contains. However the following day a good friend of mine said she had signed up to this amazing beauty box where the product where good sizes, all brands she wants, and she couldn't believe the value for money. Well of course this box she was talking about was cohort beauty. So I decided to take the risk to see for myself.
What is Cohorted beauty?
I can honestly say this is by far the best beauty box I have subscribed to, not only being amazing value for money but also delivering products I actually want and use daily. Monthly you will receive a quality black box beautifully hand tied with a satin ribbon. Within your box you will receive 5-6 luxury (and I mean luxury) beauty products, majority of which are full size. Similarly to the above beauty brands you will receive a small magazine, which gives you hints and tips on how to use your new products. Within my first Cohorted beauty box I received:
Nars Monoi Body Glow Oil 2 - RRP £25
HD Brows sculpt and glow palette - RRP £45
Bobbi Brown cleansing oil - RRP £31
Blending sponge - RRP £5.95
Bellapierre Lipstick - RRP £20
Bellapierre waterproof lip liner - RRP £20
RRP Total = £146.95
Genuine luxury beauty brand you want, such as Nars, Bobbie Brown, Givenchy.
Great product sizes, either full size or larger than sample size.
A helpful Magazine telling you how to use each product.
Beautifully packaged, feels like a real luxury brand
Averaging monthly at £111 worth of beauty products for £35.
Their online management system is confusing and hard to alter payment details, so make sure you get it right first time.
£35 a month is the most expensive beauty box I have come across
I have genuinely been so impressed with Cohorted beauty, and will continue my membership, although £35 seems extremely expensive per month for the amount of good quality beauty products you actually wish to use it is very good value for money!
I would recommend glossy box similar to Birchbox, if you are looking for a cheaper monthly beauty subscription this is one to try. The glossy box features is part of their celebratory edition, as it marks their 5th birthday
What is Glossy box?
Glossy box is a month beauty subscription service, with boxes containing 4-5 select hair, make up, body and nail products from a mixture of well known brands to new brands and includes a general mixture of full and sample size products. Within my first glossy box I received:
A glossy box pouch in collaboration with Raefeather - RRP £20 (apparently)
Spa to you, deep pore cleansing facial brush - RRP £6.99
MUDMASKEY facial detox mask - RRP £19.66
MUA most popular 12 shades - RRP £4
Cowshed body lotion 30ml sample - RRP £2
RRP total - £52.65
I like how they have put products in which complement each other, for example the face mask and the deep cleansing facial brush
£52.65 worth of product for £13.25 seems to me like good value for money
Leaflet given to describe each product does not provide as much details as 'how to use' as other companies
Wish it contained more make up instead of skin care products (3/5 products were) skin care
Hit and miss from month to month weather I will actually use all products.
Rating 3/5 If your looking for a cheap monthly subscription then this is a great one to try. Again the products you get each month are rather hit and miss but for the value for money I definitely think its worth a try
